It was only a few weeks ago that I made my repeat prediction that Augmented Reality pornography was not a matter of “if” but “when” (ARdirt.com/16). My AR sidekick Bobby Simpson poo-poo’d my predictions, but it looks like the scoreboard says Joseph 1 – Bobby 0.

Playboy Magazine has just teamed up with Layar to create some AR steam on your smartphone magic window. (see Layar brings Playboy to life on your smartphone). For now, it’s just the Playboy Magazine cover coming to life through AR, but when will naked women come to life through the centerfold pages? Is this the beginning of the AR pornography movement? Is this a good thing for AR?  I will let you, the reader, answer that question.

My good friend Brian Wassom of AugmentedLegality.com also made that prediction back in 2012 and revisited the subject in his 2013 predictions. Brian humbly gave himself a big fat 0 after reveiwing his 2012 predictions in January of this year. Brian, give yourself a point for 2013.

Why am I talking about Augmented Reality pornography? One of the biggest reasons is that my blog results shows some of the keyword searches that drive traffic to my page.   As I have said in the past, “Augmented Reality Porn” is one of the biggest search terms that I see when people arrive at my landing page.  People are searching for it more than any other term, so it is obviously an important topic in the AR space and is worth covering/discussing. Day after day “AR Porn” searches bring people to my site because I talk about AR porn.  I know they are disappointed because I do not have the final product they were seeking.  Back in February of 2012, I wrote a blog post titled “Top 5 Reasons Law Enforcement Cannot Ignore Augmented Reality.”

Augmented Reality and Porn: The calm before the storm

There has been no secret that the porn industry has been doing backflips over the potential that Augmented Reality has in creating the ultimate porn explosion with this growing technology.  Consented adults can do what they like, but eventually AR porn will pave the way for the next wave: Augmented Reality Child Porn.  You may want to dismiss this fact but the question is not if but when this will happen.

This is not a moment where I am proud of my predictions, but reality has slipped a little closer to concerns where Augmented Reality can take us.  I urge my Augmented Reality friends and partners to carefully review what road we want to travel down the future of this amazing and powerful technology.  I know in my heart that no developer or start-up company would advocate for Augmented Reality Child Pornography, but the further away we distance ourselves from it can only benefit AR.

What is your opinion on the subject?  Are you a supporter of Augmented Reality Pornography? Will this slippery slope take us faster down a path we do not want to go.  Can this distract the good uses of AR and stumble AR out of the starting gate? Maybe I am just “old school” but your opinions and feedback are important in this shifting and emerging technology.  Give us your feedback!

Gizmodo.co.uk has a different perspective.  Their headline is “Finally, a Proper Use For AR – Porn.” Do you concur?

I think this app is possible because it is being done in the Netherlands . Apple is pretty strict regarding adult apps and content here in the U.S.

  2. Not sure if it’s a great use of AR, but it might help the technology progress?
